Drop in water temperature makes fishing hard.

5/16/2022 - Devils Lake, North Dakota

Day two on the water was different from day one. We had overcast skies, gusts of strong winds and low temperatures. Over night the water temperature dropped 2 degrees, which caused the fish to become more lethargic.

We launched the boat at the same point and fished along the same road we did the day prior (abandon Hwy 281). The day started off hot with 3 walleye and 2 pike within the first 30 minutes. But then everything shut off. We stopped getting bites and the other boats near us lost all activity. At this moment Garrett (our captain), decided it was time to try something different.

We began to troll along what was left of Hwy 281, pitching weighted jig heads at the bank with hopes of finding active fish. To our luck we were able to pick up fish slowly but surely. I found that often active fish are found in groups. When one fish was caught we would setup on that spot that is how we were able to increase of success rate.

We spent seven hours on the water which was two and a half hours longer than the first day. Nonetheless we were able to catch a three man limit and have a great time on the water!

Thanks to Bry’s guide service for the awesome experience and I’m excited to go back!
